Do you want to keep your AC repair minimal?

When summer hits South Bend and temperatures soar, your home air conditioner becomes an essential lifeline to indoor comfort. The same is true for our neighbors in Mishawaka, Elkhart, Granger, and Niles, where summer heat can push cooling systems to their limits. But what happens when your system doesn’t perform like it should? Often, it comes down to neglecting routine upkeep. At Goff Heating and Air Conditioning, we believe that informed homeowners make better decisions. That’s why we’re sharing practical and effective DIY air conditioning maintenance tips that can help you extend the life of your AC system, boost its performance, and avoid unnecessary air conditioning repair costs.

Why AC Maintenance Matters

Your air conditioner works hard during the hottest months of the year. Like any machine, it needs regular maintenance to function efficiently. Ignoring maintenance may lead to higher utility bills, inconsistent cooling, and more frequent breakdowns.

The good news? A bit of routine care can go a long way. Whether you’re prepping your system for summer or doing a mid-season check, these DIY air conditioning maintenance tips will keep things running smoothly.

1. Turn Off the Power Before You Start

Safety first! Before performing any maintenance, always switch off power to your air conditioner. You can do this either at the main breaker panel or at the exterior disconnect box located near the outdoor unit. This step prevents electrical accidents while you’re inspecting or cleaning the system.

2. Clean or Replace the Air Filter

Dirty filters restrict airflow, forcing your system to work harder. Check your air filter monthly, especially during peak usage seasons. Most filters should be replaced every 1-3 months, depending on your system and indoor air quality needs.

If you have allergies or pets, consider using a high-efficiency filter and replacing it more often. We also recommend the SolaceAir Air Ranger filter, which effectively captures dust and dander, pollen and other seasonal allergens, and airborne particles and irritants. Remember, clean filters improve both system efficiency and indoor air quality.

3. Clear Debris from Around the Outdoor Unit

Leaves, grass clippings, and other debris can block airflow around your outdoor condenser. Use gloves and a brush or vacuum to remove debris from the fins and fan area. Leave at least two feet of clearance around the unit for proper ventilation.

Pro Tip: Trim back any bushes or shrubs nearby to prevent future blockages.

4. Inspect and Clean the Condenser Coils

Over time, condenser coils collect dirt, especially if the unit is near trees or a dusty area. Dirty coils reduce the system’s ability to cool your home. With the power off, gently spray the coils with a hose and use a coil cleaner if necessary. Avoid using a pressure washer, as it can damage the fins.

5. Straighten the Coil Fins

Bent fins block airflow through the coils. You can straighten them using a fin comb, available at most hardware stores. Be gentle and work slowly to avoid further damage.

6. Check the Thermostat Settings

Ensure your thermostat is working properly and set to a comfortable temperature. Consider upgrading to a smart thermostat, which can optimize energy usage and alert you to potential system issues.

7. Clear the Condensate Drain Line

A clogged drain line can cause water damage and affect humidity levels. Locate the line (usually a PVC pipe) and clear it with a wet/dry vacuum. Adding a cup of vinegar to the line every few months helps prevent algae and mold buildup.

8. Inspect Insulation on Refrigerant Lines

The refrigerant lines should be insulated to maintain cooling efficiency. Check for missing or damaged insulation and replace it as needed to prevent energy loss.

9. Listen for Unusual Noises

Grinding, squealing, or rattling noises can signal a mechanical problem. If you hear something unusual, it’s best to call in a professional for a closer look.

10. Schedule Professional Maintenance

While DIY air conditioning maintenance tips can significantly improve performance, some issues require a trained technician. At Goff Heating and Air Conditioning, our expert team offers comprehensive service repair for air conditioners, ensuring your system operates safely and efficiently.

We recommend scheduling professional maintenance at least once a year to catch potential problems early and extend your system’s lifespan.
