Your Basement's Last Line of Defense

Here in South Bend, we know what heavy rain looks like. Between the spring thaw and summer storms rolling off Lake Michigan, a working sump pump isn't a luxury — it's what stands between your finished basement and thousands of dollars in water damage. When it quits, it quits fast, and usually at the worst possible time.

If you've ever walked downstairs to find water creeping across the floor, you know the sinking feeling. The good news: most sump pump failures follow predictable patterns. Knowing what to look for can save you from a soggy disaster — and knowing when to call a pro can save you even more.

The Most Common Reasons Sump Pumps Fail

1. Float Switch Gets Stuck

The float switch is the trigger that tells your pump when to kick on. If it shifts position inside the pit or gets tangled with the pump itself, it either runs constantly or doesn't run at all. This is one of the most frequent calls we get for sump pump repair in South Bend, IN — and it's usually a quick fix.

2. Pump Is Overwhelmed

Most residential sump pumps are sized for average rainfall. During a major storm or a fast snowmelt event, the volume of water coming in can simply outpace what the pump can handle. If your pump is running non-stop but water is still rising, it may be undersized for your home's water table situation.

3. Clogged Discharge Line

Water has to go somewhere after the pump pulls it from the pit. If the discharge line is blocked by debris, frozen solid in winter, or improperly installed, water backs up and the pump works itself to death trying to push against the blockage. In colder months around South Bend, frozen discharge lines are a regular culprit.

4. Power Failure

Sump pumps run on electricity — which means the exact moment you lose power during a storm is the exact moment your pump stops working. If you don't have a battery backup or water-powered backup pump, a power outage during heavy rain is a recipe for flooding.

5. Old Age and Worn-Out Motors

The average sump pump lasts 7–10 years. If yours is pushing a decade, the motor may just be worn out. Bearings wear, impellers corrode, and seals dry out. At that point, repair is a band-aid — replacement is the smarter move.

6. Improper Installation

A pump installed without a check valve will cycle water back into the pit every time it shuts off, burning out the motor prematurely. Incorrect pit sizing, poor discharge routing, or a pump that's simply the wrong type for your basement can all cause problems down the road.

What to Do When Your Sump Pump Stops Working

Step 1: Check the obvious first. Is it plugged in? Has a breaker tripped? Test the outlet with another device. Sometimes the fix really is that simple.

Step 2: Manually test the float. Lift the float by hand. If the pump kicks on, the float is stuck — reposition it so it moves freely.

Step 3: Listen for the motor. If you hear humming but no water moving, the impeller may be jammed or the discharge line is blocked. Don't let it run like this — it'll burn out.

Step 4: Check the discharge line. Make sure water is actually exiting outside your home. If the outlet is frozen or clogged, clear it.

Step 5: Call a plumber. If none of the above resolves it, or if your basement is actively taking on water, stop troubleshooting and call for help.

When Repair Makes Sense vs. When to Replace

If your pump is less than 5 years old and the problem is isolated — a bad float switch, a clogged line, a worn check valve — repair is usually worth it. If it's over 10 years old, has failed before, or the motor itself is shot, replacement almost always makes more financial sense.

A good plumber will give you an honest assessment rather than patch something that's one storm away from failing again.
