On a recent episode of WSBT’s  HomeTown Living, our own Justin from Goff Heating and Air Conditioning sat down with Kim to talk about one of the most common seasonal questions we get:

“What do I need to do before turning on my air conditioner for the season?”

The answer? It’s all about maintenance.

Just Like Your Car, Your AC Needs a Tune-Up

You wouldn’t drive your car for years without an oil change—and your HVAC system is no different. Air conditioners in South Bend, Mishawaka, and Granger are hardworking machines that need regular attention to keep running efficiently. Without it, you might experience uneven cooling, poor airflow, or even a complete system breakdown right when you need it most.

What Happens During an AC Maintenance Visit?

When one of our technicians comes out for a cooling tune-up, we check all the essentials, including:

• Electrical components – Ensuring all wires, capacitors, and connections are safe and sound.
• Refrigerant levels – Too low or too high can both spell trouble.
• Drain lines – We make sure they’re clean and flowing properly to avoid leaks.
• Coils and components – A clean system runs more efficiently and cools better.

We recommend annual cooling maintenance in the spring and furnace maintenance in the fall. Some customers like to schedule service just before the season starts, while others space it out over the year. Either works—what matters is that it gets done!

Do I Have to Replace My Furnace and AC at the Same Time?

Not necessarily. If your air conditioner is struggling but your furnace is still in good shape, you can absolutely replace the AC only. We’ll help you determine what makes the most sense based on your system’s age, efficiency, and overall performance.
